Pipe ID tapes are hence made of tough materials like polyester and finished with UV resistant laminates that also enhance the tape's durability. Tapes might come with a backing paper over the adhesive surface. The backing paper is removed as the tape is wound around the pipe. Thus one typical structure adopted for pipe id tape is a four-layer construction. A polyester base and a solvent adhesive form the core of the construction. A polyester laminate coats the polyester base while a siliconized backing paper protects the adhesive surface. At times, it might not be possible to wind the tape completely around the pipe. In such cases, the tape should be capable of being cut and applied to the accessible circumference. One convenience is "upside down" printing of the messages. This means that messages are printed in pairs, in reverse directions. This can be a great convenience in some situations, as persons coming from opposite directions can easily read the message.
